Tanzanite Information

Tanzanite

Tanzanite is one of the newest gemstones on the market, only being discovered in 1967. Tanzanite comes from Tanzania, a country in Africa and it is a very rare and beautiful stone. Tanzanite has wonderful properities, tanzanite usually looks cobalt blue, but depending on the angle that you look at it, it can turn a beautiful purple or even a sage green.

Legend has it that Tanzanite was first discovered after lightning struck the mineral zoisite which was lying in the grasslands during a rainstorm. A fire resulted in the grasslands and the normally brown zoisite was changed into beautiful blue tanzanite.

Tanzanite is mostly popular due to the efforts of Tiffany & Co, who have advertised the stone to the masses as a birth stone. Just like a diamond is popular for an engagement ring, Tiffany & Co. has been marketing tanzanite as a gemstone that should be given when a child is born. Most tanzanite is sold in the United States and many analysts expect that Tanzanite will continue to grow in popularity.

Tanzanite is a beautiful gemstone and mainly used to accent bracelets, earrings or necklaces. Although tanzanite is beautiful and can be worn on almost any type of jewelry item, most jewelers suggest that it be not worn as a ring stone due to the possibility that it can chip easier than many other types of gemstones.
