Sapphires

Sapphire

Sapphire is a beautiful gemstone that is found in many hues formed by aluminum oxide. Most gemstones that are formed by aluminum oxide are known as corundum minerals. Sapphires are not only extremely beautiful; they are also very strong and scratch resistant making them perfect for many jewelry applications.

Sapphires come in a multitude of hues including blue, grey, white, yellow, orange, green and pink. If a sapphire is a hue of red or purple, it is no longer called a sapphire but a ruby. One of the most sought after sapphires are the ones that come in the color of blue, they include either titanium or iron inclusions which help make their beautiful color.

Many people seek star sapphires that have an asterism. An asterism is an optical phenomenon that looks like a star at certain angles. Rubies are another gemstone that also exhibits this trait.

While many sapphires are mined all over the world, much of today’s consumer jewelry includes synthetic sapphires that are created in ingots. Usually sapphires will be labeled created or synthetic at the jewelry shop.

Sapphires are an excellent addition to almost any piece of jewelry including bracelets, earrings, rings and necklaces. Due to the sapphires properties of being resistant to scratches, many high quality watches use sapphire for their watch faces. Usually these thinly sliced transparent pieces of sapphire are created to form a scratch resistant watch face with the ability to protect itself from scratches from any material except diamonds.

If you are looking for a wonderful gemstone that is extraordinarily beautiful comes in many wonderful hues and is incredibly strong and scratch resistant, take a look at sapphires.
