Symmetry can be an important aspect to your diamond. Symmetry means that there is an exact reflection of form on the diamonds shape and arrangement. Symmetry affects the diamond cut and can have an affect on its value and brilliance as well.
If you are purchasing a diamond, it is important to look closely at the diamond to inspect its symmetry. While most symmetry will be close to impossible to detect with the naked eye, usually the better the symmetry, the more valuable the stone.
Symmetry takes into consideration the diamonds misshapen table, facets, girdle, etc. Some stones may have an extra facet or an off center table or culet. The most notable is when a table is off centered. The crown or pavilion of a cut may be non symmetrical as well or you may have a wavy or uneven girdle.
It is important to note that the symmetry is more of an issue when you have a clearer stone. With a diamond with a lower clarity, you usually won’t be able to see inside the diamond as well and thus diamond symmetry doesn’t make as big difference.
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) does rate symmetry and there are seven ratings from Extremely Poor to Excellent. You should be fine with a symmetry rating ranging from Good to Excellent.
If you are buying a diamond, make sure you take a look at the symmetry. Symmetry can add value and aesthetic beauty to your diamond.
