Diamond Fluorescence

Diamond Fluorescence

If you have been looking to purchase a diamond, a term that might come up is fluorescence. Most people might think that fluorescence is due to the brilliance or fire of a diamond; however it is usually referred to another characteristic of the diamond.

Fluorescence of a diamond is when a diamond emits a soft colored glow when in the presence of ultra violet light. This is caused by the mineral properties of the diamond causing the reaction. This characteristic of a diamond is now being debated by gemologists to determine if the diamond should be valued less for having fluorescence.

Gemologists that favor a reduction in value due to fluorescence state that having mineral properties that cause fluorescence take away from the color of the diamond and should be valued as less. However for most gemologists, fluorescence is of little consequence and should not be a major point or even a serious consideration when buying a diamond.

When buying a diamond, most of the time fluorescence will not come up and should not be an issue. However if a jeweler states that the price is more expensive or less expensive due to the fluorescence of the diamond, you should be suspect of this dealer. If you are looking to purchase a diamond, focus instead on the 5 C’s such as cut, clarity, color, carat and cost
