If you are interested in purchasing a diamond, it is good to know general terms for the different parts of a diamond. A facet is a flat part of a diamond; some say it is a flat face of a diamond’s cut. Depending on the diamond’s cut will determine the amount of facets.
One of the most common diamond cuts is the Round Brilliant Cut. The round brilliant cut has 58 total facets. These facets make the diamond have extraordinary beauty, brilliance and fire. There are a few types of facets on the Round Brilliant Cut, and they all refer to a different part of the diamond.
Table Facet
The top most facet of the diamond and the most important facet, it will usually determine the brilliance and fire of the stone. On a round Brilliant Cut diamond, the table should be octagon in shape.
Star Facet
Below the octagon table on the Round Brilliant cut are 8 facets called star facets. They are simply named star facets, because when looked down upon from the top view they form an 8 point star.
Kite or Bezel Facets
These are the facets that are shaped like a four sided kite and extend from the table to the girdle of the round brilliant diamond
Upper Girdle Facets
These facets adjoin to the kite facets and are connected to the girdle of the stone.
Pavilion Facets
Located on the underside of the diamond, these facets connect from under the girdle
Lower Girdle Facets
