If you are interested in purchasing a diamond, one of the terms you might have heard is the “diamond cutlet”. It also goes under the name Culet pronounced Kewlet. The diamond cutlet is the most bottom facet on the diamond. The diamond cutlet is not the most important part of the diamond; however it can affect the brilliance of a diamond. Here are some tips.
If you are purchasing a diamond and the cut you have chosen is the Round Brilliant cut, you will want to ask if the cutlet facet is large or small. Having a large cutlet can detract from a diamonds brilliance because it may be seen through the diamond. Most diamond cutters will usually make sure the diamond culet is small so that the brilliance is as strong as possible.
While the diamond cutlet is not of extreme importance, sometimes depth of the diamond can cause the cutlet to be elongated and unattractive. Usually if the cut of the diamond is proper and close to perfect, you won’t have any problems with the diamond cutlet.
If you are buying a diamond and are concerned about the diamond cutlet, make sure you have it appraised to see if the overall cut of the diamond falls within common, high quality guidelines.
